Paris 2015: Émile Durkheim, 5e arrondissement

260 rue Saint Jacques:

'Né à Épinal le 15 avril 1858, reçu en 1879 à
l'École Normale Supérieure, Émile Durkheim achève sa for-
et 1912. En 1913, sa chaire
s'intitule enfin "Science de
l'éducation et sociologie".
Profondément affecté par
la guerre, où il perd son
fils, Durkheim meurt
le 15 novembre
1917.'

'Born in Épinal on 15 April 1858 and accepted into the École Normale Supérieure in 1879, Émile Durkheim completed his education with a research journey to Germany, and in 1887 he succeeded in creating a course in social science and pedagogy at the Faculty of Arts in Bordeaux. He then dedicated himself to teaching, without losing sight of his main guiding aim: elevating sociology to the status of an independent science. In 1898 "L'Année Sociologue" was published, which made him an indisputable leader of a discipline, surrounded by brilliant collaborators. Called to the Sorbonne to take the chair of the science of education, he lived in this building between 1902 and 1912. In 1913 his chair was finally called "Science of Education and Sociology". Deeply affected by the war, in which he lost his son, Durkheim died on 15 November 1917.'
